Your child is just beginning to notice details, follow simple paths, and match what they see. This guide explains what to watch for and how to make practice feel like play.
Watch for the gap between what your child sees and what their hand does. If they seem to be looking at the right spot but the pencil goes elsewhere, the eye-hand connection is still developing — that's exactly what this level targets.
Can they notice that two shapes are different colours? That one item in a row looks different? Emerging visual discrimination is about noticing, not yet about speed or accuracy.
At this level, understanding that you can't go through walls is a bigger skill than staying neatly inside them. Reaching the end by any route — even a messy one — is a real win.
Copying a 2-colour pattern requires seeing the sequence and reproducing it. If they copy only one colour or shape, they're seeing part of the pattern — a great starting point to build on.
Wide guide bands give lots of room. Note whether the pencil stays generally on track or wanders freely — this tells you where to pitch the next session.
Enjoyment matters more than accuracy at this level. A child who wants to do another maze has already built the most important skill — sustained visual attention.

Your child can follow simple paths and match basic shapes — now they're working with narrower corridors, longer sequences, and more complex patterns. Details start to matter.
Does the pencil stay between the maze walls most of the time? Occasional wall touches are fine — consistently cutting corners or ignoring walls suggests more Emerging-level practice is needed first.
Following 8–10 dots in order requires working memory as well as visual motor skill. If the sequence keeps getting lost, reduce the number of dots and build back up gradually.
A 3-colour (ABC) pattern requires holding more items in visual memory than an AB pattern. Note which part breaks down — colour, shape, or sequence — to know where to focus next.
The non-dominant hand should rest on the paper to keep it still. A sliding paper makes all visual motor tasks harder and is easy to address with a simple reminder or a piece of non-slip mat.
When copying a design from a nearby model, note whether the child looks back and forth or tries to hold the whole image in memory. Looking back is the more accurate strategy — encourage it.
More complex sheets take longer. Watch for quality dropping after the first few minutes — this is visual fatigue, not inattention, and worth noting for your OT.

Visual motor skills feel more reliable now — your child is working toward staying neatly within narrow paths, copying complex designs, and sustaining visual attention across longer tasks.
The pencil should stay comfortably within narrow maze walls most of the time. Frequent wall contact at this level is a signal to grade back down.
When copying a multi-line design, note whether proportions are preserved. Scaled-down or distorted copies suggest spatial reasoning is still developing.
Before starting a complex task, does the child scan ahead? Planning before acting is an executive function skill that transfers directly to handwriting and academic tasks.
Can they notice when they've gone off track and correct themselves without prompting? Self-monitoring during visual motor tasks is a key school readiness skill.
Consistent-level tasks take longer. A child who produces high-quality work for 2 minutes then drops off may need shorter sessions rather than simpler tasks.
Can they extend a pattern beyond what's shown — predicting what comes next? Extension is the bridge from Consistent to Advanced.

Visual motor skills are well established — your child is tackling complex multi-step designs, tight precision tasks, and independent planning before acting. This level bridges directly into academic visual motor demands.
Does the child scan the whole task before starting? Advanced-level tasks reward planning — a child who dives in without looking often struggles more than one who pauses to assess first.
Complex tasks require holding a sequence in working memory while executing each step. Note which step accuracy drops — early, middle, or late — to understand where to focus.
Advanced visual motor skills should be visible in everyday tasks — art projects, handwriting, colouring books. If worksheets go well but real tasks still struggle, generalisation is the next target.
Some children rush and sacrifice accuracy; others are very slow and very accurate. Neither extreme is ideal — efficient accuracy develops with regular practice over time.
Can they mirror-flip a design or rotate a shape mentally? These spatial tasks are some of the hardest in this category and underpin maths, map reading, and visual puzzles.
A child at the Advanced level who seeks harder challenges and notices their own errors is showing excellent metacognitive development — that's the long-term goal of the whole visual motor category.
