Pre-writing strokes are the building blocks of every letter and number. Before a child can form an "A," they need to be able to draw diagonal lines. Practicing on a whiteboard or large paper before moving to standard paper builds the same stroke patterns with less fine motor demand. Large-to-small is always the right progression.
Short writing tools naturally encourage a tripod grasp. A broken crayon is one of the most effective grasp-development tools available — and costs nothing.
Where you start and which way you move matters as much as the shape itself. A dot for the starting point and an arrow for direction are the two most useful visual supports for any pre-writing task.

Cutting with scissors is one of the most complex fine motor tasks young children are asked to perform — it requires hand strength, bilateral coordination, visual motor integration, and motor planning all working together at once. Difficulties with scissors rarely come from "not trying hard enough." They almost always reflect a gap in one of the underlying skills — weak hands, an underdeveloped helper hand, difficulty tracking a cut line visually, or insufficient motor planning capacity. Identifying which foundation is weak is the first step toward effective support.
Children with sensory processing differences may also struggle with the sound and tactile sensation of cutting, or with the pressure required to open and close the blades.
The first scissor skill is simply opening and closing the blades to make a cut into the edge of a piece of paper. Each snip is complete and separate — no continuous cutting yet. This is where fringe-cutting activities like the lion mane live.
The child can now make multiple connected snips to cut all the way across a narrow strip of paper. This requires the open-close-open rhythm to become continuous rather than separate. The helper hand begins to hold the paper.
The child follows a printed straight line from one side of a strip to the other, staying within a noticeable distance of the line. The eyes are now guiding the cut as well as the hands. The helper hand begins to rotate the paper.
Squares, circles, and triangles require the child to change direction — stopping the cut, adjusting the paper with the helper hand, and resuming. This is a significant leap in bilateral coordination and motor planning.
Tight curves, concave lines, spirals, and complex silhouettes. The helper hand rotates the paper fluidly and automatically. Cutting has become an efficient, reliable tool rather than a demanding task.
Opens and closes scissors with one hand. Makes single snips on the edge of paper. Cannot yet cut across a strip continuously.

Pull the parent guide and activity sheets for the child's current level in each skill area. The parent guide explains the skill in plain language and gives specific home practice guidance. The activity sheets provide structured session and home practice material.
Each skill area has a clinician packet with a goal bank, grading table, caregiver coaching prompts, and documentation language. Use these to set session goals, adapt difficulty, and write progress notes efficiently.
Give families the Getting Started Guide at their first session — it explains the level system, how to use the resources, and what to do first. Then provide the relevant skill area parent guides so families understand the clinical context behind the home activities.
Every parent guide includes clear signs that the child is ready for the next level. When those signs are present consistently across home and clinic settings, move to the next level's resources.
Parent guides and activity sheets are designed to extend clinical work into the home environment, not to substitute for skilled OT assessment and intervention. Share them as adjuncts to therapy, not as standalone programs.
When you are unsure of a child's level, place them one level lower rather than higher. Building confidence at a level where success is frequent is more effective than beginning where the child consistently struggles.
It is common for a child to have mastered some skills at one level and some at the next. Use your clinical judgment to select activities from both levels as appropriate — the level system is a guide, not a rigid gate.
